I have now :
- had the whole cassette replaced
- new chain

That was the first bike shop.

The eighth (smallest of course) gear kept "popping out" that is there were "holes" and it jumped (stayed in gear but jumped).

So I just had the bike tray also replaced.

A different bike shop.

They said my chain was needing grease.

Now much better but still with
- new chain
- new cassette
- new bike tray
- greased chain
- and a professional set-up

It still "pops".

Much more rarely but still.

Any thoughts of why or what to do?

Sorry @Marais I'd love to try and help but am a little confused.

Your Bike is six speed, but the problem is in the eighth cog?

I'm not sure what the tray is?

I'd start by checking the bike carefully in a stand. Is there a stiff link in the chain?

Also the bike has been worked over by pros a month ago and a few days ago. Everything checked. I do not get it.

With the chain in the smallest sprocket, what direction does the rear derailleur cage point to eg 8 o'clock?
With the chain In that sprocket,
a. How far (in mm) between the return section of the chain (ie from the chainring) and the chain on the 6 o'clock point of the upper jockey wheel?
b. How far apart (in mm) are the upper pulley wheel and the sprocket teeth?

Can you post a side on photo of the drivetrain with the chain on the smallest sprocket please.
What’s a bike tray?

I live in France even though I'm from the US. It is in French a "plateau". Even ALMIGHTY GOOGLE doesn't seem to know what the heck that is. It's the gear under the pedals. I'd love to know the English term.

OK here is the whole SHLABANG in images. Still, rarely in gear 8 it "pops".
I'll send multiple photos just to be sure you guys have all you need.

Many, many thanks!

De nada. In galician and spanish the chainring is called "catalina", literally Katherine. I imagine it would be equally baffling trying to find a translation that would make sense.

Funny just like a child we learn words in a language and then don’t know them in another. Of course as an American English is my mother language. But being a bike geek in Paris has changed what I know. I now know most of the French words for bikes and none of the English words. Thanks again

I saw your images on the other thread and could see the chain was correct length (if too long, might have caused the symptoms described). Which is why I said 'ignore the questions'. Which you did (see questions above asking for quantatitive answers: not answered by those images).
What's a Shlabang?

A variant by an American who has lived 38 years in Paris of this = Shebang
