Can anybody help I need to buy a new shimano sora 8 speed derailier but I don't know which I have on the bike ive got a 12 28 on the back so I don't know which one to get short med long.

Short should be fine if you don't plan on getting a bigger cassette than a 28 or maybe you might squeeze a 30 onto it.

From Shimano techdocs for the 8 speed RD-3300, SS is short cage, GS is long cage:
The above suggests a long cage if you're running a Compact (50/34) or triple chain-rings.
It's been said that you can get away with larger sprockets than specified but I couldn't confirm this.

It WILL take bigger. Managed a 32 on my sons bike (MTB cassette) coupled with a 39 up front, got him up Ventoux (just don’t do the big / big combination).
