Depends on what sort of components and the design I guess. I'd keep an eye on it and to check if things don't get melty.
I have a radio that takes 6x1.5v batteries (so presumably rated at 9v) I have been connecting it up to a 12v car battery (12.75v) when in the garden - it works just fine,
wil it last long or will it burn out ?
will most things designed for 9v work of 12v ?
How big a diff in voltage does it take until things start to smell funny?
In the case of the cheese in our fridge: 0v.
