We had a similar effort at Upper School, huge room, tons of computer stuff, bits of ticker tape spewed out that more than likely meant nothing to anyone. Probably more technology now in a greetings card that plays a tune when you open it.
When I was at school we would type our code into a teletype which would spew out paper tape. That tape was fed into the actual computer. The computer spewed out some more paper tape that was read back into the teletype to show the output.

We had another one that you programmed by turning lights on with little switches to represent the binary. You'd write your program out by hand then look up the codes you needed and enter those into the machine.

I used one like this in my first job in a insurance company.

Also had the job of reading through punch tape before it was spliced together for the overnight run.
