Today is Joan of Arc's day in my home town of Orleans. This is to celebrate the 7th of May 1429 when she kicked the English out of Orleans. Every year, a young girl from Orleans is elected as Joan of Arc and is paraded in full armour, with her soldiers , through the town . It is very important occasion that attracts many visitors from all over.

I love Orleans. I bought a hybrid bike from Decathlon there when my Dawes Galaxy frame broke. I also ate what I thought was a horse burger but it turned out to be a beef burger with an egg on top - steak hache a cheval

I once spent some time in Orléans. The most French I learned was, "Au feu les Anglais". Felt-tipped on the door, scratched on the car and muttered in the bars, "Au feu les Anglais"! History lasts a long time. And it was the French who put Joan au feu.

Do they then set her on fire ?

I visited Rouen a couple of times on school exchanges years ago - on one occasion the market place where Joan was burned was hosting a classic French demo. I can't remember what the complaint was but the cry was:

"Brulez - Maggie - Thatcher
Comme - Jeanne - d'Arc!"

Happy days....

I was in Orleans a couple of years ago while cycling the Loire valley route west to east. Nice place, but I preferred Beaugency a few hours ride to the west of Orleans. And Amboise, lovely place. As was most of the Loire. I want to go back to France on a bike . Hang on; only a few weeks to wait ; Bordeaux to La Manche this time .
