You didn't need to buy a new sim. You could have just removed the old sim, and connected to a wifi network. Android doesn't need a sim card to operate.

But that gave you local calls to keep in touch with your friend while abroad, so it's all good.
That is very helpful to know. I thought about that but didn't try.
Two questions.
Will WhatsApp work without a SIM. I could try and see. If it does, you really don't need a SIM.
Does the iPhone work without a SIM?

When we fly as a family Mrs Gti insists on having the boarding cards on her tablet. It's a complete ballache because something always goes wrong and we end up with a queue of tutting passengers behind us while she desperately tries to find the files. When I fly on business I like to have that piece of paper in my hand, printed out and easy to find.

I'm "sure" the answer to both is yes.

(pretty sure  )
What's app will work without a sim in the phone but you'll need to connect via Wi-Fi instead as its a internet service.

Again any phone will work without a sim but with slightly limited capability. Anything net based will work

I travelled to South Africa in the early days of online checkin. As in, we checked in online, but literally no one else on our flight had. All etickets, so I just arrived at the airport with my boarding pass for the outbound journey. I probably had a print out of my confirmation email in my suitcase. Turns out at least at the time, SA required you to have proof of your onward journey at immigration, or they will put you on the next plane out.

Luckily my flight back was with the same carrier who bought me in, so after a short wait in "detention" (ie the seats near the immigration desk) I was allowed into the country.

Of course, if I'd been travelling with old fashioned paper tickets, I would have had them with me, and not left them in my suitcase.

Sure, you can of course use Skype, Viber or Whatsapp for calls.
Yes, but I can make calls and send text using my O2 number and minutes. It's very handy, and it doesn't require the person I am contacting to be running any particular software.

One of the reasons I stick with o2. You can still make calls using WiFi even if you have swapped the sim out.

You see, this is what I like about these forums. I didn't know that.
So I will not give up my phone unless of course I am traveling to a place where there is no internet or WiFi.

Most of central and eastern Europe is very good for use of technology. You can pay your taxi fare using contact less card.
