Print outs for international travel but I solely use my phone in the UK. I could use it for payments but I choose not to and prefer a card and yes, everything is on Google or other things should it be stolen/lost/broken.

Paper isn't the be all and end all either. I once binned my ferry tickets in the campsite. Cue about 15 mins of searching rubbish bags before I found them again.

Human error also once saw me trying to gain access to the wrong terminal at the airport. Luckily those bods who check your tickets do actually pay attention, it had been such a long intense day in meetings, I'm not sure I'd have realized my error until too late.

I have just come back from Italy. All the travel details were on the phone. But I also had 2 sets of paper copies. One set in my case and one in Jannies. I also carry the codes for my phone in case I lock it up.

All my passwords are written down and hidden at home. My in laws look after the house and I could ring them if I needed the passwords.

It just needs a little forethought and planning.

Same here I don't rely on phone too much.
I'm of the dinosaur generation (and proud of it) and always use print-outs or scribbled notes with the details on, as you mention above.

Glad it worked out OK for you.

Same here.I don't really rely on my phone.

In the latest move toward a brave new world, a European company has offered its employees a chance at becoming cyborgs.

NewFusion, a Belgian digital marketing and tech firm, recently took steps to makebiohacking a company-wide initiative, Sputnik reports. Instead of old-school ID badges, NewFusion's workers can opt for a microchip implant in their hands to gain access to the company's HQ and computer systems.

We'll say that again: Employees can get physical chips surgically implanted into their flesh to access their building and computers.

One of my fave movie quotes, quite apt for this:

"The more you overthink the plumbing, the easier it is to stop up the drain" (Scotty on sabotaging the USS Excelsior in ST3).

I use print outs, 2 copies of everything, one set with me, the other stuffed in my luggage. I also have stuff backed up on a USB stick that I keep attached to my wallet, which goes in a moneybelt!.

It sometimes pays to be paranoid!.

Well done for sorting it out. I also don't like using paper, but in your situation I would keep paper back-ups because I would probably not have had the sense to buy another SIM like you did. I think if you (we) solely rely on tech then we also have to accept that Google or iApple will have all of our data. Convenience always comes at a cost!

I'm not entirely against that idea. I see people walking around with those phone holders that double as a wallet. If you lose that, you've lost everything. it's much harder to lose your hand by accident.

"He'd lose his head if it wasn't* screwed on"

*my inner pedant suggests "weren't" in place of "wasn't". Subjunctives and all that.

Here for rides.
No one, to the best of my recollection has ever tried to mug me for the paper copies of my boarding passes, itinerary, and hotel booking details. For my pohone on the other hand....

I save everything on dropbox too. Belt and braces. Plus a zip tie for emergencies, as it were.

And don't get me started on people who try to check-in at boarding gates using the app on their phones. I don't think I've ever seen it work first time.

I love the tech and I travel quite a bit for business (Mrs N handles all pleasure trips and prints stuff in triplicate and the like)

My smartphone and laptop are linked so all the important itinerary stuff is on both of them. If my phone has a meltdown or gets nicked or whatever, I've got my laptop

The only exception to this is fast ticket references to pick up train tickets at stations. In true luddite style I write the reference on a piece of paper as I probably don't bother with the laptop and....well....you never know do you?

I have now realised that I don't need to have worried too much. I have had 3 options.
Remove the SIM card and connect the phone to WiFi network and all my information is safe and at my hand. All airports provide free or paid WiFi.

Buy a new SIM as I did.

Telephone UK customer services and they would have let me going. I rang the customer services yesterday.

Find a pc with internet access and retrieve all documents.

I will not go back to papers. I understand some use duplicate and triplicates but I won't. I found solutions.

As to loosing the phone, all what you need to do is to log in to a computer and wipe off your phone. Then buy a new one and log in with your Gmail account.

But I will only depend on my phone when I am in Europe or another place where I am confident of available technology etc.
