....... What do the numbers on pint glasses mean??

'2043' seems to be a common one, but I have seen others, like '1965' and I have just found a half pint glass with '76' on it.

What are they??

We've been here before!

Actually, I looked at the 1965 one again, and it has that on both sides of the crown emblem as if it is was a date, but 478 (St Helens) underneath.

I also have a 2138, and I see more as 'CE M12' and 'M13'

Where are the codes then? In amongst the small numbers under the new 'CE' mark??

Going by the list released earlier this year, by the DTI, they're still active. "Glass spotting" is back on the books.

Question for you now:
What's a glass, made in France doing with the number 27 on it?

Since learning this, I have now seen it explained on two different website whilst I look for the answer to the question I'm about to ask ask below

So, my next question is, I have just bought an old George IV era (1936 - 52) pint glass with the number 545 (York). It has an 'A' underneath the number, but what does that 'A' stand for??

I know 'C' is Castleford when dealing with things like a '301', but..... 'A'??

The glass doesn't appear to be very well made, and I am wondering if it is in fact a wartime one, seeing as the quality dropped during that time.




P.S. I have also just bought an old George V (1910 - 35) stoneware half pint mug stamped for Camden (number 524) off Ebay for a tenner. A bit like the old pewter tankards, they used to use stoneware mugs and jugs too.

Two for £5 at a local market. 11 on one, the other unmarked. Nowt fancy & light in the hand.

Glasses were/are made in France for the UK market. Companies like Arcoroc for example.

Branding on a glass is often extra to me, I am more interested in the number.

EDIT: Clearly not.

Anyway, collecting branded glasses is all very well, but to collect those humble and obscure, rare glasses means that one cannot limit oneself to one specific genre!
