Listening to the radio today it seems we are exploring exciting new ways to find the allusive cure.

So what do we think, will we find a genuine cure in our lifetime...or ever for that matter.

As a side note, my neighbours daughter stated some years ago, when asked what she wanted to do for work" that she wanted to cure Cancer"

We all felt that this was lovely in a patronising and resigned sort of way.

We patted her on the head and said good for you.

But she meant it. She had a plan, knew where to study, how to get there and want to specialise in.

Now a few years later she has achieved A Star in every GCSE (every one) and is tracking for exemplary A level grades. She has conditional offers from Oxford and Cambridge but seems keen on Durham as I understand it suits her long term goal..she even had an unconditional bursary offer from another uni.

Every day we see her across the street, books set out on the dining table...studying. She has cancelled her family summer holiday this year and wont be going skiing in march with her mates...all cancelled...by her...not her parents who have no idea where she gets her focus from.

If ever there was a hope, I feel it's the likes of her that will crack it.

Inspiring to see such drive in one so young. I get bored halfway down to tying my shoelaces.

Good luck to her. I hope she is successful in her quest as cancer is such a horrible disease which affects so many people in an indiscriminatory way.

I was stopped in the street the other day by one of those chuggers asking me if I could spare 5 minutes to help cure cancer. I said I'll try but not sure how much we can get done in just 5 minutes.

Ahem. Sorry.

Britain is apparently leading the way in finding a cure, but from my limited understanding, it encompasses so much variation that it's going to be difficult to pin it down. I do wonder though whether maintaining a healthier lifestyle will bring a faster reduction in cases than the ever elusive cure?

I have to say, at 17, she is a little intimidating in her brightness and her attitude is very contagious. My daughter, who whilst doing well academically is admittedly not as gifted or focussed, tells me that at schools she is perceived as a little geekish but is respected by others that would usually shun the bookish types...perhaps her social comfort will be a major factor in her success.

Quite. The ability to communicate is as important as the ability at harbour and retrieve knowledge.

Just remember that "cancer" describes a group of diseases and that they will largely need specific therapies depending on the nature of the disease. In that sense, I don't think there will be a "cure for cancer" as such.
For sure. As such it seems that research is pushing towards enhancing our own immune system to work it out for itself. My neighbours daughter (at 17!) thinks more research should go into investigating species that don't "mutate" cancerous cells and to identify both the environmental and physiological elements effecting them...I have no idea if this thinking is old hat but am blown away that someone so young has already developed a line of research.

If you look at the survival rates for most forms of cancer compared to thirty years ago you could say we are already on our way there, though how long it will take to reach 100% is a mute point.

Sounds like she might be thinking of naked mole rats which have never been observed to suffer from cancers.

Had two in the same class I was in at school. Both were considered "odd" by most. Heavily into the sciences and actually knew what they were talking about, subject wise. At times even the teachers would ask for their view/opinion on the subject.
When last heard of one was a leading surgeon at Great Ormond Street Hospital.

I'm full of admiration for her single-minded determination, altruism and hard work. She needs to take that skiing holiday though. People need a break from work. They come back being far more cheerful and become more productive. The time "wasted" on holiday doesn't matter in the longer term. Tell her take a break.

I just tried looking up the bright kid in my class and found someone who looks to have released 34 papers on Optics and molecular physics at Oxford. In school he was the sort that got 110/100 on maths papers as he did all the questions on the paper and usually still finished before most of the others.

I watched the program last night though I was trying to prepare some bits for work today, but it looked as though there is lots of different approaches being trialled and that's probably going to be the technique needed.
