I've long thought that:

1) Car drivers should be given a taste of what it's like to be on a bike before taking their test.

2) Non-driver cyclists should be taught to read the road like a driver.

In the light of point 1, when I'm in the car I give cyclists a much wider berth than many other drivers I see on the road.

In the light of point 2, I seem to have far fewer incidents with cars than the non-driving cyclists I know, simply because I drive a lot too and I anticipate what car drivers are likely to be about to do.

EDIT: When I'm on my motorbike, I am sometimes as cheeky as f*ck with car drivers

I saw awful pavement riding from one chap (sending peds jumping out the way) around 100 red lights jumped, some at a fair old pace and bikes squeezing into really stupid positions that were "asking" for them to come unstuck.

All of this left me feeling a little embarrassed for our fellow cyclists...

No wonder people have a stereotypical view of us if this is their only view each day

Sigh

This is very true on my Commute (city - sidcup) the amount of RLjing and pavement cycling is just unbeleivable. This morning there were 6 of us cycling down Evelyn Street traffic light turn red and it was just me who stopped at the light. Just imagine from a driver's perspective. I think that we should all have to pass a test just like a driving test to be allowed on the road but who's going to enforce this? I haven't seen a patrol car for yonks. Just my 2 pence.

I think we may have been seperated at birth, I agree entirely with all of this (even the motor bike bit, although I do still consider myself a very conservative Motorcyclist compared to some I see )

A test would, as you say, be nigh on impossible to inforce as we are not registered (no plates or vin's) and are also very hard to identify because of this, which means that automatic systems like cameras wont work on us...

Ultimatley this means that enforcement would be required by good ol' fashioned man-power...something that every police force has little of these-days and struggles to increase.

I think that awareness and perception is the only answer and we all have a responsibility to improve that (Cari-sts, Cyclists and Motorcyclists alike)

London is a bad example, which is probably why we get picked up on our bad habits by the meejya and motoring correspondents (being mostly London based).

I am horrified every time I see some of the antics of cyclists (more likely POBs) in London, it's rare(ish) to see the same behaviours in my neck of the woods.

It is pretty bad in London and I think its getting out of hand . I thought Rljers were only young/students but this is not true. I reckon its going to get worse before things improve. Perhaps most commuters are not keen cyclist like ourselves and not aware that the HC applies to them. Perhaps one day someone in authority will pick up on this and stop those Rljers and educate/fine them. After all this is what everyone see, people will never remember the Cyclist who stopped for the Red Light.

If you ask me some of the worst for bad cycling and going through seem to be people from the London Dynamo, at least in my experience.

Agreed. Have you ever cycled around Richmond Park when they're out in force?
