can someone give me a heads up on a good gps, that I can plot a route on?I've a 22 mile ride to and from work I'd like to start riding. I've a good iPhone 6 but I don't want to have it go flat on me,
Thanks inadvance

Ride with GPS plus garmin 800 a possibility but not a cheap option with mapping

Be much cheaper to just get a back up battery and mount for the iPhone however :smile:

Or just plot on RWGPS and memorise the route with a print out as back up. Old skool map stylee :smile:

Back up battery for iPhone? Like a booster pack

Garmin Edge 1000. You can plot routes on the fly and an excellent battery life.
seems overkill for a 22 mile commute. He should know where he's going after a couple of days :smile:

Garmin edge touring. Can be bought for around 120 2nd hand and tend to be in as new condition as the Stat junkies go for the 800/810.

I'm happy with mine, just needed to tweak a few factory settings

How many potential options are there for getting to work? To do 22 miles in London there could be 000s of possible options. From Stockbridge (wherever that is) to work may not be the same. First step I'd see what a map or google throws up. Before spending £300? On a garmin 1000. My garmin 800 can direct but not necessarily the best route and it does throw wobblies!

@vickster has it right

For a regular commute you would be wasting money. After a few rides you will have memorised the route. If that's all you're going to do, do the following:

1. Go on the website www.ridewithgps.com
2. Have a go at planning your commute
3. Use the google maps tool on the planner (drag the little man icon) to any junctions etc you don't know. This way you can have a look at them and familiarise yourself
4. Ride it with the route on your smartphone. Don't use the smartphone to navigate, just use it in the event you forget the route
5. Refine it

Of course if you plan to do other rides on roads you don't particularly know then it may be worth investing in a GPS device. But for a regular commute? Definitely not
