A good bike gps I can plan a route on

I think this is just the reason the OP is giving to justify buying a GPS, and why not i say.
I have a Touring Edge Plus, i use rwgps to plan my routes as the garmin connect interface is rubbish.
Never let the unit recalculate on the fly, in fact don't let it do anything that you haven't specifically downloaded or its liable to have a massive hissy fit.
Other than that it's great.

@nickyboy you missed a vital step in your list of options (from my experience of London commuting) That is, as part of step 2 or 5 "Ask the CC commuters for route advice" It made all the difference for me.

kinda reminds me of my next door neighbour who I see every morning put a GPS on his windscreen to go 6 miles to work...

I have just got a 1000 and use it with preplanned gpx files for local rides, commuting (complicated cross country route, not learnt it yet even after 3 or 4 attempts) and will be heading across France soon and then down to Cornwall. Not used the on the fly routing yet. Settings need careful attention so happy to share my experience with the OP ( I live in Winchester if that helps)

How many potential options are there for getting to work? To do 22 miles in London there could be 000s of possible options. From Stockbridge (wherever that is) to work may not be the same. First step I'd see what a map or google throws up. Before spending £300? On a garmin 1000. My garmin 800 can direct but not necessarily the best route and it does throw wobblies!

I agree, my 810 if allowed to plot the route can come up with some strange solutions. Plotting the route on a PC and transferring to the 810 is the best solution.

You can plot the route on bikehike or map my ride then export it to most gps .

The cheaper ones just give you a line to follow on a blank screen .at first you will take a few wrong turns and have to turn round as it shows you leaving the route but with practice it will get you anywhere you want.

Im sure you can do this with a basic garmin 200 for about £80

Can someone who has one (garmin200) confirm this is right please.
