A hard few weeks...

I love commuting by bike to work. It is generally one of the highlights of my day. However, I must admit it has been a bit less fun over the last few weeks.

First there is the rain. :rain: Blimey there has been a lot of it. I have heard the old wives tale of cyclists only getting 12 soakings in a year. Over the last few weeks I have beaten that figure! Rain isn't usually a problem, but it has been teeming down so often that I am constantly battling to get my kit dry for each ride. Ah the joys of living in the west of Scotland!

I've had various colds and sickness bugs, which have left me feeling just a wee bit under the weather (under the rain!!). It means that towards the end of the week, my legs are feeling pretty tired and the last few commutes (i.e. today) are hard work!

Lights. Damn, they have been giving me problems. I've lost two Mars 4.0 lights (I stupidly reused the old bracket with a new light). Probably jumping off when I hit one of the thousand of pot holes on my commute home. A few nights back I also hit a big pothole. Hard. The bike was fine, but the catch on my B&M Ixon IQ decided to give up the ghost, sending my batteries into water filled pothole oblivion. Grrrrr. All at a time when money is tight! Luckily, due to still having an old Ixon IQ from a year or so back that I also managed to break (I didn't click it in right) I managed to repair the light. Still, it confirms that the battery catch isn't the best.

Oh and then last night (in torrential rain!!) on the pitch black back roads, I see a car approach in the distance. I start to move to the side on the lane to let it past. It's a shame I didn't see the pothole/ditch at the side. I wobbled into it, couldn't keep my balance and off I came (admittedly at slow speed), and proceeded to tear some skin off my knee (and a nice hole in my bib longs and glove). Ouch! The car was stopped about 30m away. It sat there for about 20 seconds and then decided to pass. No offer of help or anything. Thanks for that! Only minor damage to the bike thank goodness. I do have footage, but due to the lack of light, you can't see much. I'll post if anyone wants to hear me shout ouch!

Oh and our youngest is generally waking us up twice a night at the moment.:tired:

Oh well, things can only improve.......can't they!

I'm sorry to hear you are having a tough time. As they said it never rains but it pours.

Do you have to commute by bicycle every day? Maybe you could skip the odd day with particularly bad weather especially if you are ill. We havent got into winter proper yet, so dont ware yourself out.

And is there anything you can do equipment-wise to help with all those potholes? - they arent going to go away soon Is there any way you could switch to a mountain bike with fat tyres (if you havent already)?

I have to put my hand up and admit that I've had a week off the bike this week:

Mon - always get the bus as I bring in a week's worth of towels, clothes, bananas etc.
Tues - dentist straight after work; not a place to visit in lycra!
Wed - it had been very wet outside on Tues & overnight the temps were below zero. Fearing ice, I decided it was safer to leave the bike at home given my ice record!
Thurs - Gales, and decided I was just going to have a lazy week anyway.
Fri - last day of the lazy week.

Have to admit, I've quite enjoyed the extra 1/2hr in bed each morning & the chance to recover a bit (I've been feeling pretty run down and stressed recently), as well as read on the bus (been engrossed in a Tony Hancock biography all week, and will finish it on the way home tonight). I'm not going to beat myself up about taking a wee break from the bike, and I'm sure I'll be enjoying life in the saddle as usual next week.

I have been lazy this week also, given a bug my daughter so no appetite hence low energy levels.
Managed two days on two wheels, enjoyed it but that made me feel worse.
Combined with the strong gusty winds and rain convinced me to take the easier but more boring option.

as Goo says, take a few days off and don't beat yourself up. Sounds to me like, with the late nights because of your kid, and feeling a bit under the weather (rain!) stuff that would probably be like water off cyclists back is really getting to you. have a lie in mate!

Leemo,

As of this week, 3 days a week I have to use the bike as my wife has just started back at work after maternity leave. The other two it is better if I leave my wife the car, although she does offer me the car. To be fair, despite it not being the best few weeks, Id still prefer to go on the bike than in the car.

I wouldn't want to use a hybrid for my trip. It's 11.5 hilly miles, so I know for a fact I wouldn't enjoy it as much. I'm going to be e-mailing the council about the state of the roads, but I won't hold my breath!

Ya big jessie!! ;)
Seiously though, sometimes a break is the right thing to do. I won't be cycling in on Monday as I will be in Edinburgh then (for my sins!). So hopefully the extra day off will help.

On a good note though, I have lost weight since starting the longer commute. I was beginning to tip the scales at 87kg a while back, but now am sitting at about 82.5kg. I'm happy at that weight now, so plenty of buns to stop any further weight loss!

Ah, a lie in! Now I think I had one of those.....way back in 2005! (Seriously!!!)

Even at weekends we are woken at 6:45am at the latest. Ah the joys of parenthood!

I'm off to the US for a intensive week long course in January. That'll be my break!:biggrin:

i was only commenting to Mrs UD last night that it's been a tough week, wind, rain, darkness. But then i think back to last winter and realise that the worst is yet to come !

I didn't mind last winter. Wrapping up against the cold isn't a problem, and the main roads were find. Its the constant wind and heavy rain that is a pain at the moment.

Hi Magnatom,

This is my first year of cycling, and I have found that over the last few weeks I have been finding it a bit more of a chore and my average speed has taken a hit. I'm putting this down to the following factors, but I'm not sure which ones are working in what proportion. Advice welcome.

Weight - In the winter, I tend to carry more clothes. E.g. wearing a high vis and gloves, and a short sleeve high-viz and short fingered gloves in case it brightens up
Clothing - More layers = more restrictive. I guess there will be energy lost there.
Cleaning - The bike gets muckier quicker, needing more cleaning which takes time and effort.
Light - I do go slower in the dark - mainly for caution.
SAD - I don't actually suffer with SAD in a medical sense, but I would guess that I do bounce out of bed a lot easier on a sunny Spring day, so probably have more energy
Metabolism - I hear this slows down in the Winter. Perhaps that gives less energy.
Temperature - I wonder if like a car battery, bodies work less effectively in the Winter. Also they must have to adjust to temperature changes - going from a centrally heated house, to the cold, to a heated work, and back again.
Panniers - A couple of months ago, I fitted panniers, and whilst they are invaluable, they must be adding some weight.
Wet - I find that being Wet can really sap the energy. Probably psychological.
Bugs - As you've suggested, you have no idea how many little nasties your immune system is defeating, and that all takes energy!

I'm sure that you'll pick up soon,

Definitely not been as fun the last couple weeks.

The wind has been the biggest issue for me, as my commute is quite exposed and coastal. Last night was an exercise in keeping the bike upright for most of the ride home (40+ mph wind with 60+ mph gusts) That and just having made it through hedge cutting season and it's associated p*nctures (even in Marathons).

On the other hand I've just received my new helmet light (well Dealextreme torch and mount) and it's amazing how much more respect I'm getting on the road now. Also in the really bad winds the drivers have been (mainly) more friendly so it's not all bad.

Enjoy your day off the bike on Monday, and hopefully the weather will improve next week and you'll get back to enjoying whizzing past those traffic jams in the mornings. :bicycle: The one nice day we got on Wednesday definitely made me feel a lot better.

Although my legs were tired tonight, it wasn't too bad on the way home. A tailwind most of the way and.....shock horror.....it didn't rain!

Still I' am actually looking forward to a few days off, and I am starting my recouperation with a nice bottle or Erdinger.
