A laptop bought for a fiver in a charity shop. How do I turn the thing on?

Seeing as my old phone I used for watching videos, listening to the radio, posting on CC, Facebook etc went kaput after dropping it down the toilet the other day I've decided to buy a laptop to replace it, instead of another phone. I went into Curry tonight to see what they had. I've whittled it down to two, but the salesman being a salesman tried to get me to buy something expensive! He said if I remember rightly that I'd be better off with a chromebook or a apple mac, adding that both are actually computers, not just a laptop like the ones I fancied. I took photos of the two laptops I fancied and the expensive thingies he tried to sell me. Advice and opinions are needed please before I buy one this weekend!

Those two are the ones I had my eye on.

Memory is the crucial element
8G is a minimum and getting one with more will be beneficial.

Get a Chromebook but be aware it functions differently to the, presumably, Windows machine(s) you're probably familiar with.

Has it been explained to you how a Chromebook works? You need to appreciate this and understand it and be prepared for some learning, not a lot but there will be some.

If you feel this will frustrate you buy a low cost Windows machine. Don't buy an Apple Mac, that will frustrate you.

I agree
the grand kids have them and they are a pain

and sometimes I have to help clients (through AgeUK) who have them and they are just "different"
which is a right pain when you are just trying to connect to the wifi or get onto the internet

less flexible as well - which "could be interpreted" and less easy to avoid things like ads and cookies and things like that

For the lightweight use to which youll be putting it (emails, general web surfing, sepia tinted victorian tweed ankle porn) Accy the Chromoebook will be perfect.

I don't want to spend more than £350 to £400 though. I have history when it comes to fecking electrical items up, as in dropping them and getting water on them!🙄🤷

Mmm, I can only find the above of the two he tried to flog me. If I remember rightly the above is about £835. Crazy price, but such a nice colour!!

If it's the higher spec one, £799. Not a crazy price, though a lot more than they were a few months back (they started at £599 for the base model- like everything else electronic, regardless of brand, the prices have gone up and will keep going up for some time to come)- they're extremely capable systems, superbly built, and still excellent value for money. Moot point if it's more than you're willing or able to spend. And yes, the Mac OS would be a steep learning curve for you as well. Just buy a cheap new or refurbished Windows laptop.

Do you have any links to those in your last sentence?😉
