It's no problem really, as you cycle, just tilt your head at 90 degrees if you think there's an oil patch, and bingo! It'll be obvious.
Sometimes the oil patch will do that for you, as you go from upright to laying on your side, following the lack of friction afforded by said oil patch.

Of course! How could I be so stupid! Though mind you, this would exclude the possibility of detecting an oil patch on a vertical wall, and as we all know, this could have disastrous consequences if you decide to lean your bike up against said wall.

I'm just not sure it's worth the risk.

That's nonsense. How could you know if there was going to be a oil patch? The only safe thing is to always cycle with your head tilted at 90 degrees.
