1st, I know zilch about engines or mechanics.
My grandson has just bought a 2nd hand mini Cooper (I think it's a 67 plate).
80K on the clock.
It's a lovely looking car.
His Dad (my SiL) thinks its a mistake as he says they are soooo expensive to maintain.
Anyone got any views on that ?

I've got one, had it from new. 66 plate,125000 miles. Always serviced by mini. Never had an issue to date.
Probably could find cheaper servicing but why bother?
It's gotta go soon, but can't find anything else i like.
Mini do reduced servicing for older cars that's still not overly cheap. At least you get someone who should know how to service it properly.
I get a loan of the newer minis during servicing and Think their a bit shoot.
Whatever

The later ones had a BMW diesel unit. The earlier PSA units were OK, but were very maintenance fussy and didn't tolerate any kindo of neglect or abuse. Of course, prats bought them and then upset them by using them for short journeys, and after 3 years most ended up at Fred in a Shed for servicing where they rarely got fed the diet of expensive low SAPS oil they required, so a lot of it isn't down to the engine itself per se but the way they were treated.

The BMW-PSA "Prince" engine was troublesome, but rarely serious. I'd have to check but by 2018 that engine had made way for the 1.5 BMW unit (not 1750) on the Cooper which is better, albeit not foible free (what engines are.)

Unless they're prepared to have it professionally inspected prior to purchase and take it to somewhere reputable for service (and not just then local independent on an industrial estate) I'd steer them elsewhere. They're well made vehicles and can be very long lived, but that engine needs attention from people that know them and who are in a position to apply then periodic software updates BMW release, which keep the engine sweet and the sat nav up to date.

Check with the BMW dealer, because annual service plans are dirt cheap, often as little as £15 a month and they include MOTs as well.

In short, it was a premium product when new and 7 or 8 years on it needs the proper care and attention it deserves else they might just as well buy a Fiesta.
The SAPS content is quite critical as you say Drafo and it annoys me that so often you'll hear pundits say 'you must use the right oil nowadays, 5w30,0w30' etc, yet you'll never hear them highlight how important the ACEA or API specs are. My Mazda requires API SL, SM or SN...the higher the ref, the lower the ash content, all quite critical to allowing the engine to work correctly.

We decided against the Mini EV, far too much torque steer. Decided on the 150hp petrol in base model design. Trying to finalise features to get.

Does anyone know if Mini dealers haggle on price or is it take it or leave it?

My last car back in the UK was a Mini One. Great car, and no issues in the 2 years I had it. The engine is really shoehorned in, so even relatively trivial repairs can prove costly due to this design.

We had a Honda Jazz here for over 10 years, also had a crammed in engine design, but again we had no issues, even after 180,000 miles.

All a bit of a lottery I guess.

I've been looking at second hand Minis as the daughter fancies one as her first car. My criteria is c£10k, <50k miles, petrol, manual transmission. We have seen some OK ones. Quite a few have those seats with the leather insets and front cushion that seem to age incredibly badly.
We test drove a very nice almost new one which was £16k, but out of the price range.

Other possible vehicles include the modern VW Beetle, and we also looked at the Vauxhall Adam - a much maligned car IMHO and now very cheap on the second hand market.

I’ve bought two new over the years and ended up paying list price on both.

Mini(BMW) have adopted the fixed price structure. The dealer says they never get to pre order cars for their stock, they have a pool that BMW keep across the country. You can order a specific vehicle if non meet your needs.

The downside is Mini dont load up their cars with all the features, you have to pay extra

So as you say we're going to pay the price they want or walk away
