A novel approach to commuting

A very small percentage of members here spend more time whinging and wailing about cycling than they do cycling. Cycling is very much like life - full of hazards. You may want to spend your life wrapped in bubble wrap with someone reading stories to you out of the Bible of Political Correctness but face it, it aint going to happen.
Please stop posting the photo out of the Highway Code about overtaking cyclists. How much of you commute is on roads like that? Read the words associated with the photo - I think it advises drivers to give as much room to cyclists as they do to cars. Now look at your videos and see how much room drivers are giving other drivers!
Now, can someone give me a reference that states that cyclists will always have a tailwind, fine weather and ideal roads? You cannot find one - not even in CycleCrap? We do not live in an ideal world, do we? All of us have bad days as well as good; the main difference is that many of us do not let the bad bits spoil our day.
Mobile phone use - yes I have heard the argument that a driver using a mobile phone can be involved in accident and could kill a member of your family. Someone could drop an unfinished bag of chips and your elderly mum or gran could slip on them, crack their head open and die but you do nothing about litter louts, why not? Oh, sorry, pedestrians do not have number plates and there is no way of outing them on youtube and giving you a sense of purpose.
You are noe home from work, family time, but not for you! You have to review your footage to see if there is anything worth a mention on here and an upload to youtube. Congratualtions, you have found something 'worthy', please, please, please spend a few extra minutes putting into Windows Movie Maker (or similar) to enhance the brightness. You know what happened at 01:37 into the clip - others do not because it is too dark.
So either learn to take the rough with the smooth or give up cycling.
If you think this is a rant - it is not. Believe me you do not want to be within 5 miles of me when l am in rant mode!

Hmmmm, to some extent I can see where you're coming from. But......

.... this is the Commuting section of a cycling forum. Where people post to share experiences and opinions of... their commutes. If somebody has recklessly endangered your life as you innocently make your way to work, it causes stress. A harmless and constructive way to let off some steam and therefore preserve ones sanity is to vent your anger to like-minded individuals, hopefully restoring your inner peace in the process. Those who don't want to hear it simply don't have to read the posts. Those who do can reply with their own experiences and opinions.

Or is that too simplistic a view of things?

Here for rides.
I must admit that some of the close passes I see on youtube don't make me bat an eyelid let alone think I'd get all shouty or arm wavy at the driver. If you start effing and jeffing at said driver, on video, then, imo, you've lost a lot of the moral high ground in the eyes of the average person who sees it; it's all about how people perceive aggression.

But it is a free country and if posting the video helps people deal with the stresses of their commute, well, I don't have to watch it or read the thread do I?

Bad day ?
Actually, no. Shortish ride up to ChoHo and back down on the Korat bypass. Passed by a convoy of about 5 buses taking kids on a day trip, plenty of shouts of 'Hello' from the kids. Pulled into a servivce station about 3 kms further on and was mobbed by some of the kids.
Average car wdith? 6 feet +? It's impossible to pass a car without giving them at least this much room between your nearside and the road edge.
I think you need to have a rethink.
Who mentioned anything about the road edge? How much space is there between two cars?
Got the painters in?
What are you on about?

2 observations:
- Most motorists (>95% at an estimation) seem to be able to pass me with at least 1m to spare when on my Bacchetta Giro 26 consistently without any problems. When I ride my upright bikes it seems that most motorists are incapable of giving me that exact same space even though I'm riding in the same conditions.
- I can't recall ever being overtaken in a car where there's been less than 9" space between wing mirrors... 9" is a fairly typical distance to get passed at on my DFs.

I like the OP's sig line:

It's nice to be important but it's more important to be nice.
Some of us post when we have something to say, others post when they have to say something.

If that isn't a rant, I don't know what is!
Dont forget, this is a cycling forum, where members share their experiences. It is also a great place for people who have just started cycling/commuting to learn how to do it. So please, could everyone ignore the OP and continue to post/moan/discuss commuter cycling to aid other newbies and refresh the experienced cyclist. I have learnt a lot from this so called 'CycleCrap' site as I am sure others have too.
