A pavement parking odyssey

I used to get paid to go there and could even access areas the public couldn't, including driving round the track at night on a dibble Suzi DR400, and it still wasn't worth it.

I just drive it virtually. Good fun and costs nowt.

Reminds me of the old Lidl at Knaresborough. To avoid having to wait for a delivery lorry to back into its service bay some clown decided to drive across the store frontage not realising the service bay beyond dropped down quickly. Result car sat on its rear wheels and chassis with the front wheels in mid air.

Reminds me of my first car when I was a student. I parked up at a supermarket and managed to lock the keys in. I had to get a bus back to the digs and get the spare key. By the time I got back the store was closed and there was a locked chain across the gate!

Drove around the carpark looking for an exit panicking a bit but I then noticed a section of the car park boundary near to the exit gate was just a narrow (1m) grass verge separated from the kerb by some edging stones only a few inches high. Looked like I could get out that way. I wouldn't do it now but I though sod it; the car was a banger and not worth much. I slowly got the front wheels over the edging stone but then I heard the clang and scraping. Eek! Luckily for me it was rear wheel drive so I wasn't stuck. I just carried on accompanied by a horrendous grinding sound, until the rear wheels could ride up over the edging, and away. Probably not the best for its longevity, given I was parking on the seafront all the time. It succumbed to the red metal worm a year later; poor thing's sills were more isopon than steel!

Quite a few years ago, when I was delivering stuff in a village..
Picture the scene: snowing a lot, very cold; non-local customer arrives a the shop and, not wanting to park on the road, decides to use the empty car park next to the shop...

It wasn't actually a car park.... It was the village duck pond 🦆 🪿 🦆

Many moons ago, about 4 decades back, a mate of mine was out jogging during one cold snap and flagged down a woman in a car to advise her that the road she was,on was in fact that Grand Union canal.

Carpark, and building, to the left, where he went when he left the van on the main road. Taken from the topside of the car park entrance. I'd stopped, expecting him to reverse back into the carpark.

Look at this one I saw as I tried to safely pull out from the cemetery onto a main road! Not only is it narrowing the pavement down by half, it's parked next to that telephone box thingy, making passing with a pram, mobility scooter etc impossible! Trying to see right to pull out means you have to almost drive up to the main road's middle line to see if it's safe. It's often parked there causing a major problem!🤨

MAny years ago I lived in a house which was the first in a close
estate road was quite narrow

One day I was on my way out and there was a van parked outside the neighbour opposite
I just did not have enough room to reverse out of my drive even though he was parked half on the kerb

I knocked and he was very good and moved it

but after I left he just put it back where it had been

so I had to get him to move it when I got home

and again he just put it back

now - as I said - this was the first house in the road
so it was JUST round the corner and due to the curves in the road - his van was not immediately visible for cars turning left into the road

When he moved it for me he did say "I need it there as I am working from my van"

so it was blocking me getting out
and parked in a dangerous place

but he "needed it there"




I watched for the rest of the day (it was a Saturday)
he did not go back into his van even once

I walk my dog Bertie down the footpath on the A170 every day. Yesterday there was a gentleman from North gas networks repairing one their monitors which the farmer had some how chop the top off while trimming the hedge/ verge.
He had parked his van right across the footpath so I had to walk on the road in to the on coming traffic doing 40 mph to get past. He looked at me be didn’t even have the decency to say sorry.
