My daughter Rachel is eighteen and a half. She has always been a bit of a tomboy.Well a few months ago she told us she has always felt like a male trapped in a female body. She is by the way very beautiful. Her clothes are all smart ,they are all on the slightly masculine side.
So just before we set off on our American holiday. She informed us there were going to be changes,Rachel would change into Daniel, and a long process of sorting out the legal requirements would begin.Rachel/Daniel told us all this by a letter. The final part of the letter broke me and i balled my eyes out.It said she would understand if we could not cope with this or support her,and she would face this all on her own.
No way i told her i would stand infront of her behind her and either side of her all at the same time.
The reaction from family and 57 school friends has been wonderful. My aged in laws 79 and 83 came over on saturday, they had been informed by letter and a nhs guide while we were in the USA.So they could take it all in and have questions ready.Saturday was wonderful,no whys or wherefores just total support and a few tears.
Since telling us we have seen a dramatic change in our child.A freedom, happier and more outgoing.
Well today Daniel starts his first day at part time work, even his employer will support him, with a name badge Daniel go for it fly, the world is out there waiting to meet you.

Thanks but no thanks. I think I'll pass.
It takes great courage and bravery for someone so young to make such an enormous decision like that, but I have no doubt that with the help and obvious support of your family, Daniel will suceed, and will be a happy and well adjusted man. Good luck to you, Daniel and your whole family.

It has also taken a lot of courage for you to tell everyone on this forum of this event. Well done.

Best wishes to you, your family and especially to Daniel. Your child's happiness is all that matters as a parent so it's fantastic to see you all giving your full support. You're doing what families should do in challenging times: stick together!

Its impossible for most of us to imagine the situation your daughter found herself in but what I can say is absolutely top marks to you as her Dad in your outlook and support to her.

Best wishes for all your family's future happiness

This says it all better than I could.

Just an aside... I found the choice of name interesting as our first born child is Daniel but would have been Rachel if he had been a girl.
