In theory, yes. They ingest, digest, excrete and have a circulatory system.

Did the Dr. Beverley Crusher quote go something like that?

Oui bien sur; l'escargot c'est de la viande.

Mrs Gti is a veggie; I took her into a restaurant in France once and asked what they had to offer. When I had explained to the waiter that veggies don't eat fish "et Mme Gti ne mange pas les oeufs", he looked perplexed and went into the kitchen. A few seconds later the chef himself came out, stared at Mrs Gti for a few seconds then went back into his kitchen. Vegetarianism isn't widely understood in France.

Snails are animals.

Vegetarians are people who eat a plant-based diet supplemented by products that do not cause the death of the animal from which they come. Fish, prawns, woodlice, flies, spiders, locusts, anemones, clams etc etc are all meat because they are all animals. Fundamentally, vegetarians don't eat animals.

How about eating one leg at a time? Wouldn't cause death until you'd had a good few meals out of it

I read a novel last year where some aliens were farming humans in much thr same way. Odd, can't recall the name.

Are snails 'meat'?

If they are, would it be allowed to kill them in a Halal fashion? I mean, turned upside down and having their poor throats cut so they bleed to death. How cruel. Surely they have the right to be stunned prior to being butchered?

What about drinking milk? Plenty of male calves get slaughtered soon after birth because there is a very limited market for them, but most of my veggie mates still drink the white stuff that's produced as a result.

P.S. I'm very much a carnivore, just playing devils advocate

In principal I would like to be vegan and not eat anything at all that comes from an animal, but in reality, I can't sacrifice milk, eggs, and honey. So I am a vegetarian, and even though my diet may directly contribute to the deaths of calves, I'm responsible for less deaths than I would be if I ate meat.

I know someone who calls himself a vegan, but steals cheese from supermarkets.

Before I became a vegetarian I ate snails a few times when I was in France but found them pretty boring. As far as I could see the only way to make them palatable was to cover them with a lot of garlic and seasoning.

Having said that, any carnivore who wants to feast on snails is welcome to come and collect some from my garden. This year we seem to have a lot of very large slugs which could possibly be fried up and served as an accompaniment.

That's more "freeganism" and I can understand it from a survivalist point of view.

However I had the very same thought as Becs and came to the conclusion that in fact the dairy industry is often more distasteful than the meat industry

It does, however, make cake stops less simple. Couldn't believe that a ride out to Bakewell yeilded a Holland and Barret but without any meat and dairy free pasties

The really annoying thing is that a Brooks saddle I would LOVE, and honey leather bar tape would set my bike off marvellously. So if I can have vegan sausages for breakfast and vegan vanilla ice cream at tea-time....why has no-one invented the "Cheating Leather Saddle" or the "Cruelty-Free bar tape"?

I always thought that although snails are edible, slugs can be harmul to humans if eaten!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Just out of curiosity, why would a vegan eschew honey? The bees aren't killed, they're positively cosseted aren't they?

We're taking what's theirs. Maybe some vegans do eat honey, but my only vegan friend doesn't, and that's the reason he gave me.
