A Rare Sight

Driving out of Fishguard this evening I was two cars behind a 4x4 who was crawlng along and I couldn't figure out why. People on the pavement were waving in his direction and laughing, making me wonder what was going on. When he turned off I discovered it wasn't him that was getting the attention, but a guy on a penny farthing! I've never seen one on the road before.

I had neighbour who had several of them, he featured on a program about the Wolds way which was close to village where we lived. A few years later when I was shoved in to management his daughter was part of my team.

We've had them on the FNR's before back in they day and also you see a couple on the London to Brighton Veterans car rally in November.

Years ago, I met someone on one somewhere near Fort William. He said he was doing LEJOG on it. It's still the only one I've seen being ridden on the road anywhere.

I was talking to a penny farthing rider, here in Denmark, last summer.

He was riding from Rumania to Iceland on a single speed.

They 'race' them in Knutsford every year, even had a World Championship a few years ago. My mate has one - bloody bonkers.

As someone with a terrible head for heights that gets in a panic walking on thick carpet, the very idea of riding one is absolutely horrific to me!
