Sussex are dual purpose. You can raise them for meat or for eggs. My two are being kept for their eggs.

I could never eat mine - apart from being veggie, they are almost part of the family!

Well you wouldn't want to eat a bird kept for laying purposes - much too tough and stringy by the time they are finished laying. It's why the battery hens end up as stock cubes and in low-grade meat products such as chicken pies..
