I reckon a higher-mileage car is a good buy - if it has over 80k miles then it's not had short runs without the engine getting hot. Short runs kill an engine*. If it has less miles it could be that the mileage has been reduced (that's easier now with digital display than when the mechanical display 'clocked' gave mis-aligned digits). Google mileage 'correction', there are people doing it . I certainly wouldn't want to be involved in that.
* When I worked in engine design we had a test engine doing repeated cold starts - After 300 hours of testing the bores were ruined!

In my experience once you get to around 120,000 miles they’re trouble!

I never had a problem getting to 150k when doing high mileage. My current car is at 120k. Hmmm. 🤔 But no issues.
Only 3 years to go for "free" motoring. 🤞

120k could be 3 yrs motoring!

Po refer a high milage car to a local use speed hump basher!

Also avoid cars from the coast the sea spray kills them damhik!

Having worked with many E Europeans who prefer German cars and are not put off by high milers, the one thing tou realise is while the engine will generally be ok, the higher the miles, the more cost you will face with fuel pump replacement, injectors, suspension componentry etc etc.

From my experience of running high mileage BMW’s the engines are bullet proof, problems I’ve had over the years are as follows (petrol and diesel. Mainly 3 series tourings)

  • Coil packs
  • Blocked DPF
  • suspension arms
  • ball joints
  • suspension bushes
  • weeping shocks
  • VANOS issues
  • failed electric window motors
  • failed central locking module
  • failed Bluetooth module
  • split expansion bottle
  • split washer bottle
  • broken tailgate hinge
  • broken FM aerial (built in to rear glass window)
  • jammed seat belt
  • Uneven tyre wear
  • Failed CO2 sensor

VAG cars are far better

Maciej, a former colleague had a Golf diesel with iirc, around 270k on it ? (Bit sketchy memory, it's a few years ago now).
He had no problem spending on it, he commuted around 100 miles a day, 4 days a week so wanted to keep a car he knew and trusted. Nevertheless, he was servicing (oil and filters) around 3 times a year, had the injectors done, cam belt or chain, multiple brake jobs, various suspension bits done, abs pump etc etc. It was a pretty penny in costs but as he said, buy another used car, you don't know what you're getting.
It didn't make 300k, something else went wrong and he sold it as a runner but needing work.
Disappointed slightly he didn't make 300 k but he didn't have a problem with running costs at all. Different mentality to us here...

If he is anything like me then the running costs are much less than purchasing costs. To a point.
