Front fork just looks wrong.

It's based on a basic misunderstanding of human physiology. Which is, that the limiting factor for a cyclist isn't muscle power, but lung power. A fairly fit cyclist can easily ride so hard that he goes into oxygen debt. Adding arm power merely speeds up that 'in debt' moment.
I completely agree with that line of reasoning. But, on the face of it, isn't that also an argument that clipless pedals ought not to be any faster than flat pedals?

That's another weird looking contraption, the one I remember was a similar idea but it had platforms like a cross trainer.

I think you mean the ElliptiGo.

Two or three people did London-Edinburgh-London on these to prove they can do long distances.

I was a volunteer at the Barnard Castle control and the ElliptiGo fellas were the only riders who didn't have to remove their shoes before entering - the control was in a school.

At the end of the event one guy concluded the ElliptiGo gives almost the same speed as a normal bike for the same amount of effort.

No that's not it, it had a seat, but the action may have been the same.

why not go the whole hog and attach something to your ears so you can add speed by nodding your head?
