The potholes are pretty horrific there, and the worry is avoiding them could take you into the door zone. I'll pop onto fillthathole now...(although I'm sure I've already reported this road).

I'm almost tempted to get cards made up with links to magnatom, bentmikey etc videos so that when someone has a go at me for not hugging the gutter etc I won't need to argue - I can give them a visual representation of why I'm not scraping along the kerb or am in the middle of the road etc.

If it's any consolation, Derby's potholes featured on the local news last week. Famous, our potholes are.

haha we went that way on sunday, even when someone said oh no not this road, it's full of potholes. i was still not expecting that

Nearly got doored a few years back (bad bit of road, parked cars to my left and oncoming traffic to my right - I have about 35cm of space sometimes when the 4x4s/vans are parked down there).. I just managed to drop the bike at an angle and lean out. Scared the life out of me and I had to stop and get off, take a breather. Driver approached me, apologised and we shook hands.

All vans over a certain size should be made to use sliding doors.

Well avoided, it doesnt happen often but once is enough, I am very wary of vans, was an Escort van that nearly got me.

Car doors being flung open into the path of cyclists is an all too common cause of cyclist KSIs. Only a couple of weeks a go a cyclist was killed in N London in what appears to be related to a dooring.

It's a shame that the DfT can't come up with a Think! campaign on this issue aimed primarily at drivers/passengers but also advising cyclists on best practice. Whilst there at it, they could also produce a film on overtaking distances when passing cyclists etc...
