I have a three month old Whyte Coniston, which is my touring/ going down the shops bike. I've had mudguards and racks fitted. It's a great bike for a midrange priced machine, it comfortable and I like riding it.

On the way home from a short ride yesterday, riding along a normal road, smoothish, no potholes a spoke went, just snapped cleanly near the hub on the cog side.

In your opinion should it be fixed under warranty, or is it wear and tear and my my responsibility?

Personally I feel it's a warranty issue - three months is not a long time.

Even taking into account heavier cyclists, that's very soon for it to snap like that.

Personally, for one spoke I'd just get it fixed by the LBS. If it happens again within a month or so, ask the LBS to contact the manufacturer. Giant gave me two new wheels when I had this problem a few years ago.

I don't think it will even raisse an eyebrow when you take it back.

These things happen and it will be quick and easy to sort. I imagine they'll have a little look at the wheels while they're at it.

It makes sense for them, is the right thing to do and is likely to make you feel like a valued customer.

If 'takingit back' is a hassle, I'd do what someone above said and pop it into the LBS. You might even find the supplier is happy top cover the cost if you play it right.

Good luck!

Both wheels are back at the LBS where I bought the bike. I'm not expecting any hassle, but I'm interested in the opinions, just in case I get some.

I would suggest (if I hadn't read the post above) to swap it yourself. Working on a new bike is very satisfying, everything works as it should, is clean and just feels "neat". Working on an old heffer (perhaps someone else's...as clearly we would never allow such an abomination) is not as much fun.

Swapping spokes is dead easy and good experience.

But to answer specifically, its the LBS responsibility and as you say, they'll crack on without issue I suspect.

Agree with Martin.
Ask the LBS to fix the spoke and if it happens again ask them to exchange the wheel under the warranty.

I just had an Ultegra wheel replaced under warranty after a second spoke broke.

An update. You might like to know, and even if you don't, I'm going to tell you anyway, that my LBS replaced the spoke, and checked both wheels, no charge, no quibble. They also replaced a broken part on the mudguard at their discretion with no hassle at all. I'm very pleased thus far with the service and attention I have from this shop so I am going name and FAME them: BROADRIBBS CYCLES, BICESTER.

Good show! I didn't quite catch the name of that shop, could you repeat please?

More seriously, I would have been very disappointed if they had not sorted things out for you.
