I finally did that ride to Felixstowe (post #6724 here), and following all the advice here, steered well clear of the A14 or the Orwell Bridge.
I took a wide route to the north of Ipswich before dropping down through Martlesham onto the peninsula. Thanks to @mattobrien and @Mike! for the tips.

Nice ride, looks like you came right through my neck of the woods - Lavenham.
This is the ride I did back in January, through Constable country and on to Harwich then back down the Essex coast.

I liked the idea of going to Harwich and getting the ferry across the estuary but they haven't starting running this early in the year. Plenty of ideas there for a future trip.
