I decided to get the train down to Hartlepool today and ride to the RSPB reserve at Saltholme. I must admit I was a bit worried about riding the A178 although I have seen other cyclists on it. It's a 50 mph limit in some places and there's a lot of heavy traffic - wagons and oil tankers going to the chemical plants - and no footpath to use if I got scared.

I've got to say that I've never had so many perfect and courteous overtakes as I had on that stretch today. Drivers waited behind when they needed to and used the opposite lane to pass. I don't suppose any of them will be reading Cyclechat but if they do "thanks". I wish everyone would drive like they do in Hartlepool!

I know that road well. If you continue on to calor gas corner then turn left and head up to the transporter bridge. The crossing is worth the experience for the small fee.

Also do you know about the Dinasour Park on Riverside industrial park in Middlesbrough.
If you follow the river from there you can see some trains near the a19 flyover and continue onto Tees Barrage. Its all tow paths

I was on the transporter bridge many years ago but I've not heard of the Dinosaur Park - I'll have to check that out
