Talking to the woman at the Moorlands B&B this morning, the road's been closed for the last few days.
Scammonden Dam looks picturesque:

Cubist, how the hell are people managing in those hilly Pennine areas? We have enough muppets around here in the Ribble Valley and it's tame by comparison.

It's pretty much business as usual here, the A640 is always the last of the transpennine routes to be opened but the A635 out of Holmfirth is probably closed as well. Not many back roads are being gritted now as the salt is running out, and the number of 4x4 owners means the snow is compacted to driveable.

The tops above Calderdale looked much grimmer on the news yesterday, as it's even bleaker up there, and the wind tends to drift snow onto the road after the plough has been through.

I was thinking that myself. It's bad enough down in the valleys where only main roads are being gritted.

The idiots who tried to drive over Blackstone Edge and got snowed in were lucky that the Calder Valley Search and Rescue team were available to come and get them! The man in the jag didn't look too happy when they explained that they were rescuing him not his car; that would be staying there for the duration - ho ho! ;)

Yes, I had a quiet chortle over that one!

If the wind picks up like it's promised to we are gonna have a whole lot of fun with the drifts. Anyone watch Look North this evening? Those pics from '63 and '47 make you realise just how much worse it could all get!

One of the fella's running the Kirkwood Hospice staff around in the 4x4 s is the father of one of Cubester's buddies. He came out for a ride with us once on an absolutely barking mad old downhiller!

Yes - that train with the plough on the front slamming into massive snow drifts was incredible!

I was thinking about the danger of large icicles before it was mentioned on the show. Having one of those break off and spear your head wouldn't be much fun! B)

I was chatting to my mother this afternoon and she reminded me that we moved to Coventry in 1963. I remember the snow drifts that winter going over the top of the 8 ft high fence round the playing fields at the end of our road.

I didn't move to Coventry till 73, in 63 I was living on the south coast. two of my memories from then are being woken every morning by my Dad clearing the front path and going sledging on the hill above the town and realising as I walked down the lane that under the snow were cars, I was walking over cars.

Funny you should say that Longers, I was thinking of you when I took the pic!

I've not done so so far, but I'm going stir crazy. I'm going to cheat and drive down into Slaithwaite and ride the MTB in along the main road. If I get some screws into those old tyres over the weekend I might well do the narrow canal towpath!
