I did, but much as I rate his early work his mid and later output is not up to the same high standard.

I've been a fan since my (Glaswegian) Granddad bought me one of his concerts on Compact Cassette when I was ten, ....

I remember being introduced to the delights of Billy on a tape by my cousins when I was a teenager - upstairs out of sight of the adults.

Abitrary - it's time you graduated to reading Leavis, or Said or Jameson. All this flirting with the margins of criticism isn't doing you any good.

I'm sorry if that sounds a little patronising, but I'm anxious to see your head fly up off your shoulders, do a swift 360 and explode.....

For real criticism, that is criticism with a bite try Pauline Kael. On Dances with wolves:-

Kevin Costner has feathers in his hair and feathers in his head. The Indians should have called him 'Plays with Camera.'
Pauline Kael'

Billy Connolly owes his career to Parkinson.

Billy Connolly has brought more pleasure to more people than AA Gill's had hot dinners. Sad to hear of the Big Man's cancer and Parkinsons problems

I was surprised by the saturation coverage of his ailments in the media. He must have a good press office staffed by persistant and tenacious staff.

As much as I like the man, I didn't think that his ailments merited the near hysteria in the media. He's not dead or in imminent danger of doing so. His surgery was a success, his Parkinson's isn't impeding his performances so why all the fuss?

“Heaven’s Gate” is a numbing shambles. It’s a movie you want to deface; you want to draw mustaches on it, because there’s no observation in it, no hint of anything resembling direct knowledge—or even intuition—of what people are about. It’s the work of a poseur who got caught out.
which just goes to show she could be horribly wrong
