it was down to those blessed Trojans. I started up in safe mode, and then went via the 'run' command to the windows folders and (following instructions) offed a bunch of files. Back to the normal screen and the icons were restored - but, no access to the internet, which means I can't download a new anti-virus programme, because safe mode with networking won't allow you to do that.
The same rubbish appears on the administrator account, so that's got to be sieved through...
So, for the minute, I'm still able to work with AutoCad and DTP with the network unplugged, and able to e-mail on safe mode.
Got my laptop back today from 'PC Masters'. I'd taken it in there to have AutoCad loaded (which wasn't going to happen because my copy of AutoCad can only be loaded on an XP machine). They tried to strip off Vista and stick on XP, and I've now got a totally dead motherboard. Computers - can't live with them, can't live without them.
Thankyou for all your kind suggestions.
