In the last 50km of a 400, last year, I had a plastic car mat frizbeed at me from a car travelling at highway speed. An hour later we had to dodge beer bottles launched across the road from a pickup truck.

If the mat, which missed my head by inches, would have found its mark, I doubt I'd be writing this.

There are cretins in this world and no one has come up with a palatable way of sifting them out of society.

And I like to think that their congenital equipment is missing too..

Bizarrely, yesterday, I walked out of my house, and passed a car parked outside (on double yellows, presumably waiting for someone, possibly a neighbour of mine) and as I passed it, the two male occupants suddenly started making loud monkey noises - it made me jump and look round, and they just carried on, so I ignored it and walked on. I can't work out why - if they were racists, they were very dim ones, since I'm as white as they come.

It could just have been a coincidence and they were having some private joke as I passed, but it's a bit odd.

Yesterday I was skimming through the mags in Smiths and read that in parts of the USA they now see the intimidation of cyclists by motorists as a far more serious offence than previously. Unfortunately I was in a rush and didn't get more details but IIRC it was in 'Cycle Active'.

If my take on it is correct then maybe it is one import from the USA that we could welcome.

(If it's any consolation to Arch, also yesterday I was unfortunate enough to be the car at the end of the school day. Whilst I was waiting at lights one or two of the toe rags (on foot) went out of their way to thump the car roof for no reason I could see. Presumably they wanted a reaction but I too ignored them.)

I cycle everywhere (sold the car in '89) I've had beer bottles, cans, fag-ends, stones and more thrown at me by car passengers and peds. Hardly a week goes by without some kind of unwarranted abuse. I can understand an angry driver if I've f*cked up and an apology usually sorts that out.

Last summer a 4X4 pulled alongside and the driver was relaying expletive-laden instructions through his 10 year old son for me and mate to not ride 2 abreast.

My favourite though, was the lone driver struggling to open the door on his sh1tty old Escort so he could attack about 20 of us on a Sunday morning club ride. Who in their right mind would want to fight a group of 20! We were mostly fit blokes and if he had not ripped the handle from the inside of the drivers door in his fury, I'm pretty sure he would have woken up in hospital!!!!!! !!!!TW@T!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I've even been shot at from a car near Catterick Garrison with what I presume was an air pistol !
