..so in my five years of commuting i have:

1. in the same day went into the back of a car (mainly my fault) and then 5 mins later had a car reverse from a driveway into me (10% my fault as I was silly enough to see then hesitate their manouvre and assume they had seen me)
2. had a chain malfunction which led to me braking my arm (old roadie but chain clean and lubed - think road salt/grit got stuck in it - but no idea to be honest)
3. had a brake cable snap leading to me taking a wise decision and instead of colliding into back of my wife mounting kirb and slamming into a well known hairdressers street sign (again same old bike and one front brake not enough to stop - funny thing was cable replaced 3.5 weeks beforehand)
4. had a tool manoeuvre his car in front of me leading me to slip and slide off my bike and skidding across grass and slamming chest first into a lamp post

….I am currently off work with whiplash and bruised shoulder/back/chest but my bike is fixed thankfully

….anyway…is this a common trend for cyclists?…I'm in bristol and commute daily 28 miles through some $hitty roads but I'm starting to wonder if its worth it….especially in these conditions...

Crikey, you should stop letting Halfords fix your bike. ;)

I sympathise with your pain.

It's a bit more complicated than that...
In my 17 years of commuting I have....

So, no, unless my experience is rare (I suspect not) I don't think it's a general trend. Just ride with more care and maintain your bike a bit better.

There is one common denominator, must say I have never been lucky enough to commute by bike.

Hope you get fit again soon.

I commute from knowle to Severn beach and yes the roads are awful. Had an off the other week on portway. still no idea why poss slippery road and lack of experience. Could you be a bit unlucky or perhaps need a new bike. Hope you get better soon. If you still enjoy it just keep going I say

The only off I have had in the past years has been self inflicted, at very slow speed whilst trying to turn in the road.
Although I have been extremely close a few times to being knocked off by d!ckheads in cars but they were all on bright sunny dry days.

So far in nearly two years

1 - Left hooked, mainly my fault for going too fast and not braking sooner, not hurt
2 - Took S downhill too fast and had a gritty off, pride took the brunt.
3 - T Boned, 100% driver fault leaving new wheelset but ok.
4 - Travelling on shared path, slipped on leaves bruised ribs and wrist.

All part of it, though it seems every time I get my confidence back something happens

So in about 20 years I've:

1. Gone head first into the back of a dumper truck at about 25mph.
2. Hit another cyclist head on going around a bend on a narrow country lane.
3. Got left hooked on the way home from work.
4. Came off on a FNRttC after a twonk in a van passed the line of cyclists too close
5. Hit a pedestrian about a week after 4.
6. Toppled over sideways on LEL after misjudging just how heavy my saddlebag was.

I think that's it.

As long as I breathe, I attack.
Apart from punctures , once a year slip on ice and a few close calls nothing at all.

Sounds like your old bike is jinxed and how is your riding style?
Are you assertive with your positioning and signals/ communication with other road users?
