I think the guy just wants to pay for the cost of replacing mine (and my glasses), but I'm a little concerned about the whole thing.

A few years ago I was clouted and sent flying. No injuries apart from a few bruises. The driver was young and he did have insurance but he wanted to avoid going through his insurers because of his NCD.
Him and his dad arrived a day or so later to sort things out. No problem there I thought. Wrong.

Saddle ripped but not totalled................................well why do you want the cost of a new one?
Jacket ripped but still usable..................................well you can use it why do you need a new one?
Gloves torn but obviously not new ones................Don't want to pay for new one's they aren't new anyway.

The argument that if it had been his car with a damaged mirror or scratch on the wing he would want it sorted or paid for carried no weight at all.
The overall amount I wanted was about £250 which included my damaged clothes and some new wheels so it wasn't exactly like I was fleecing him. I in the end and said OK well, I'll let the insurance company deal with. That got them both bleating on about his NCD etc etc.
I lost patience and said OK pi** off or stump up now.
They paid of course but to be honest it would have been better to make a proper claim right away.

Don't forget to claim an extra £5000 for whiplash, the insurance company will expect you to.

(Disclaimer: This is a joke)

It's about £1,500 max these days !

To the OP, please make sure you are fully recovered. I was also hit on a roundabout. Thought I'd got away with it - cycled home and to work the next day. Wasn't until 2 weeks later I noticed bad clicking in my shoulder. Took another 4 years, 1 operation, many many injections and £2.5k of physio to sort it out. All OK now, and I eventually got paid out.

I found the fact my left hook which was my fault and two Yardies enough for me to jump back on the bike and crack on rather than exchange details.

Did you get the full cost of your bike back through the insurance claim?

Mine was a fairly major clout, so I got the new cost of the bike, a consideration for damaged clothing and posessions, out of pocket expenses, lost income, dental costs plus compensation on top. My advice is to go through his insurance if the Police agree the blame lies with him, you will get more in the long run.

Its already been said, but, get what happenned down on paper. Put down in a way that you can work out which sequence it happenned. At this stage it doesn't matter if its not a flowing record. You can go through & number the points in the order they occurred later.
Get the details of the officer(s) who attended & of the one(s) that took statements if different.

Get all that down, work out in what order it had to have happenned and get it down on paper, printing a copy & keeping that safe. You'll work from that copy. Any changes made at a later date will be obvious.

Get, make & keep copies of all paperwork. Working from memory three years later will be hard & you may find yourself asked about something you never put down on paper.

This thread is the best advert for joining the CTC.

Got knocked off recently, have just sat back and let the CTC's lawyers do the work. Anticipate cheque for my bike any day now.

That I would say is exactly what happened to me. Car from the left, I was on the roundabout. Mine was a big roundabout rather than a mini. I'm still off work after accident Saturday. I was sympathetic to the driver, and thanking my lucky stars as it could have been much worse, but I suppose he was irresponsible.

This forum is very helpful. Being fairly new to cycling I didn't have a clue what to do!
