How did it work with the batteries fitted incorrectly?

@Webbo2 beat me to the obvious answer.

The batteries in question have both terminals at one end, so with one in the wrong way it was simply not registered rather than pushing against the other battery. It leads me to think the batteries are in parallel rather than in series.

things used to work like that years ago IIRC. I had a fair few toys/remotes that seem to work with a dud battery which was just there to complete the circuit. Or others where a missing battery wasn't a problem; the toy just ran out of batteries quicker

I just checked... I always assumed that was a jokey professional name but apparently it was his real one! :laugh:
