Has anyone done this?

There is a red phone box on the road outside my house that will soon be decommissioned. The clean-up-the-village group are discussing adopting it with the Parish Council. If we get the go-ahead they suggested I might like to project manage the sorting out of it!

Just wondering if there was any experience out there? I'm sure I could find myself very, very busy with work over the summer if it's likely to be a total nightmare!

A phone box near to my OH's parents house has been adopted by the community as a little swap shop. People leave books, seedlings and various other bits and pieces in there to be taken by whoever would like them on the understanding that the new owners will leave something in return. Also used as a notice board with lots of flyers for local services etc.

No experience whatsoever, so no help. But heartfelt support.

There's a couple of villages in East Yorkshire with redundant phone boxes. And there is NOTHING so sad as a redundant phone box, door askew, with nothing but a faded, yellowed, damp and mildewed notice hanging inside it ... inviting adoption. Just SAD.

I've no idea how it's done but it sounds a great idea. If you've already got a group keeping the village tidy I'd think that'd be half the battle. Surely the biggest problem is people using it as a litter bin - or like some of the other contributors - a urinal.

Turn it into a public urinal
Shouldn't that be maintain it as a public urinal, since most callboxes seemed to be treated as urinals anyway!

(Going in the other direction ... somebody in Cragg Vale turned some derelict public toilets into a lovely little cottage!

Also a few around the Leicestershire villages that have been turned into libraries. Also a few are used for defibrillators. I even know of one that still has a working phone in it.
