Advice from game console experts please. DS Vita.

Son has decided to ask the beardy bloke for a DS Vita for christmas and I am happy to give the go ahead.

However, a search for a DS Vita online gives an alarming array of options. WIFI, GB, 3G, with a games pack or not?

If your son isn't going to use it for online games when out and about, then you don't need the 3G option....at home he can connect via wifi.
It has a slot for a memory card so you'll need one of those for him to be able to save games etc.
Whether you get one with games really depends if he likes the games on offer. Otherwise you can buy new or pre-owned games in stores like Game.

If you get 3G, do you then need to get a mobile contract to go with it? And how many GB memory card will he need? What will he do on the WiFi?

3G requires a contract of some description - when the Vita came out it was only on Vodafone but don't know if that's changed.
Many games require updates/downloads etc to play them...also he would be able to get online with it.
As for the size of the memory card, it really depends on what games he will play - a 4GB would do...an 8GB for games saves plus music and maybe a movie or two etc etc
