It is surprising if you go touring on your own, how interactive you can be. I'm an antisocial bugger at the best of times, not particularly confident, and go touring to get away from people and life in general!
Everything Arch said is true - take a paper or a map, go and confidently sit at the bar in a pub and chat to the bar staff - its part of their job to make you feel welcome, especially if it's a smaller village. Eventually you'll get a conversation going. I've had a couple of unpleasant experiences that I wouldn't care to repeat but on the whole I came out of myself and surprised myself at how many people I've talked to.
If you do the C2C solo you'll find also that the waymarks are excellent and there's bound to be other people to chat with who are doing it as well - either as they overtake you or you overtake them.
