Last year I went from Portsmouth to cherbourg France (£56), This time I am going from dove to Calais (£19.50)
My view is. A ferry is a ferry and there is not point in hating hills because your going to come across them if you like it or not.

If I have to choose to cycle for a couple of days extra vs getting straight to France and having 2 more days there, I would pay the extra.....

It is easier for me to say as I am 20 miles from Portsmouth so cycling all the way to Dover seems mad

Portsmouth - Le Harve is good as they do an overnight crossing, ship leaves about 11pm and gets to France for around 7am (6uk time) so can get a nights sleep and start off fresh. You can either sleep where you want on the ferry, last time I did it was on floor with roll mat and sleeping bag, or you can get a cabin for extra.

not tried other routes.

Worth considering Condor Ferries from Poole. Fast ferry (catamaran) bikes go free and about £30 ish one way . Nice cycling down from Bristol to Dorset and certainly better than hauling down to Dover or Portsmouth.

Not sure about the good night's sleep. Last time I did this journey they woke us up at 5am for no good reason.
