The coast and castles route, sustrans route 1 looks reasonably flat, ish,http://www.cycle-n-sleep.co.uk/elevation/elevcoast.htm, and with some training rides should be do-able for the kids. The pace won't be fast, and 50 miles is only really 5 hours in the saddle, at an average of 10 mph, allowing for stops for lunch ect. should be done reasonably in 6-7 hours total per day. One would hope that as they are in the scouts already, they would have some level of fitness. With Kirstie giving the troop advice on how to go about things they should have a good time.
But you forget we are talking about 12 to 15 year olds here. 50 miles is "only 5 hours or so in the saddle" but you've got to factor in a million punctures an hour, every single jumped chain, bladder purging, lunch, tossing it off 'cos they can't be bothered, whingeing and whining .... trust me, 30 miles is enough. Scouts are not necessarily blessed with an above average level of fitness by the way.

I think that as you are doing a one off talk you don't need CRB checking but if you actualy get involved then it's almost mandatory these days.

Kirsty - If you or your BIL wants to ask questions over the phone then PM me.

Venture and then Explorer Scout Leader (20 years)
ADC Explorers
And been on the leadership team of at least a dozen Scout cycle tours, UK and Europe.

So I can point out some of the pitfalls and what is needed
I'd say the target may be OTT. Hence we have never set a 'finish line' on any tour, only an objective
