There is overwhelming verifiable evidence that contradicts the bible. I am yet to see ANY verifiable evidence of anything in the bible that contradicts science

What I am puzzled about is which bits people decide to take literally i the bible and which bits they don't. When it was written, it was supposedly all to be taken literally. Since then parts of it are taken as fable or to be ignored (stoning people to death for mixing cloth for example).

Who told them they could ignore parts? On what authority?

God is society. Christianity (and Judaism and Islam and many other religions) is thought (according to some) to represent society. Most of the teachings tend to be about what you should and shouldn't do for the good of your group. There is little about self enlightenment and fulfilment. More about making society run properly. So next time you're praying to God, you may as well pray to Theresa May.

And none of it was written down for at least 400 years after Jesus died, so how can it be relied upon as a historical account? After 4 centuries it would either be an extraordinary dose of Chinese whispers at best, or fiction at worst.

I'm not religious, but I fully support peoples right to believe and worship should they choose to do so. However, I can't accept the Bible as any kind of evidence of the existence of any deity.

Try AD70 for Mark's gospel; about AD80 or 90 for Matthew and Luke.
Indeed. Much of the new testament was written by people who knew Jesus.

I don't think I've ever been really close friends with someone who believes in a biblical God. It's maybe too fundamental a difference.

I am a scientist, and I have studied science in some detail. For me, one of the biggest proofs that there is a God, is how amazingly complex many systems in nature are, including the human body. Especially when you study just how well the human body is designed to keep everything working well. And when it does fail, there are systems that 9 times out of 10 keep us alive. I find it hard to believe that it could have come about by accident, the same as none of us would look at a top of the range bike, and say,"That came about by accident or it started building itself." Yes there are plenty of things that it's hard to believe in Christianity that you have to accept by faith, but it's no more hard than believing that the world came about by chance. Also evolution cannot explain the fact that we have a soul, the fact that we feel and love. Feelings cannot simply be a bunch of atoms.

I guess what you studied was not evolution as that's not how it works at all

Yes it can. You may not like it, but yes it can. Again, it appears you do not understand evolution.

There is plenty of scientific evidence that contradicts the popularly held theories of evolution and the big bang.
There is scientific evidence, I agree. The big bang may not be the final answer, but the alternatives use scientific evidence and put forward a case for peer review. What process and scientific evidence does the bible put forward?
