we know its there, we believe it will work, we believe we know its effect, we can even measure its strength...but know one (trust me I've tried) can actually tell you what it is ...and prove it...at some point or another all scientists will revert to theoretical physics to explain it.

That's the sort of rubbish I had rammed down my throat at school when they tried to bring me up as a Catholic. It may not be as bad as telling me I'd have 72 virgins awaiting me in Paradise if I blew myself up in the middle of a supermarket but it's just as ridiculous.

Ascribing agency for natural phenomena to supernatural forces helped early humans to rationalise the world as they experienced it, but as human understanding has developed over the past 5,000 years, the need for a belief in supernatural forces has become more distant from our daily lives.
I doubt anyone these days truly believes there is an old beardy bloke sitting on a cloud judging us all and sending down thunderbolts to smite sinners, but our understanding of the universe is still limited to what science can explain, which is why we still need God to exist. It's unlikely that we will ever fully comprehend the workings of the universe but if you can come to terms with that, the need vanishes.

Yup. This is where these sorts of discussions eventually end up. I've got Christian and spiritualist friends and IME, it's best to just respect each others beliefs (or lack of) rather then feel the need to explain why we think the way we do ...unless of course you're one of those Dawkin's inspired neo-atheists who feels the need to convert believers wherever they find them, or are on a Mission to convert non-believers to whatever faith you subscribe to. Thankfully, most people are neither of those

Science does not conflict with the bible, the conflict (as I see it) arrises from a fundamental miss-understanding the purpose of the bible.
The bible itself is not a single book, but rather a library of books and not all of these books are historical accounts. Some books are historical accounts, but others contain music, poetry, rules, advice, news, predictions, messages and stories etc. The only thing that links these books is that they all tell a truth about God.
Genesis for example falls into the category of a story book that tells how God created everything and how mankind then turned away from God. Genesis was never intended to be more than a story book and it was certainly never intended to give a historical account with timescales etc. So whether or not you believe in an almighty greater, Genesis has no bearing whatsoever on scientific theories about the universe coming into being and how things subsequently developed and evolved over millions of years.

In my opinion the purpose if the bible is miss-understood by creationists and evolutionists alike.
