As promised here is a picture of the anomaly I ride past 4 times a day on the school run. It’s the closest I can get sorry.

The closest field is fallow and used for horses. The next field is a cereal crop. What it is I am unsure. But there is a bare strip maybe 3m wide and 60m long. It is near those power cables but not a service/access area for the power company. Not close enough to the cables. There are no services like drains etc on the strip. Nothing grows in it. Not even weeds. Bare down to the red clay. It looks like a mini airstrip like you see in Africa or Australia.

Put me out of my misery.

Nope. It’s just a fish finger shaped strip. Just a random gap in the field of cereal. It doesn’t join anything or lead anywhere.

Well of course it's so tempting to invent some fiendishly esoteric agricultural practice in action here,

But I'm afraid I don't know.

Maybe the seed drill was blocked for that short stretch, and the operator didn't notice??

It will be bare soil, as a result though, if they've been using herbicides..

Otherwise its landing strip for space aliens - that's the only other, possible explanation.. I've heard they've moved away from landing in the crop itself after getting so much straw caught up in the landing gear..

I know for a fact this isn’t an organic lease so your idea would fit. Most of the contractors round here are about 12 years old so maybe they were on their phone and not watching the drill?

As one young twenty nothing year old lad, proudly told us as he showed of his £120K's worth of tractor, that his contractor boss had supplied him with.

Utter madness, they're all chasing tighter and tighter margins, with bigger and bigger kit, usually leased.

Many arable farmers will admit that they're living mainly on the area payments - not making a profit from their cropping - the system is broken.

It really can't go on.
Soil depletion, biodiversity loss, climate change.

But whilst cheap - diesel created calories is what the commodity market demands - that's what they will supply.

Plus as the chair of defra remarked to me once - "You won't get the boys off of their toys" ..

Ah well, that's me done with the soap box.. - off to hand harvest this weeks saladings and 'erbs..

Such exotic herbs are usually about 5' high, at least, this late on the season.

So I've heard..

possible but unlikely - especially as the gap doesn't extend through the whole crop.

The combining contractor would be unlikely to want to stop harvesting if the grain tank was half full, in order that the difference was split, and could be measured, or put into different storage .

You've seen how they charge about the roads - tis the same in the field.

I did it ( driving for contractors) for a couple of seasons - its nuts - everyone going top speed and on constant coffee ( or worse) - the cost of machinery - and pressure from the next customer means the pace is relentless - that's why you see them going on through the night too...
