Speaking of diagnostic systems, these are available reasonably cheaply, from ones that connect via Bluetooth or USB and need software (available for Windows and most smartphones, and possibly Macs to...) to standalone devices. The Bluetooth reader I have cost £12, and software another £8. There is a standard called ODB II, but there may or may not be stuff that you can only do with manufacturer specific software - things like programming keys. The generic software trends to be able to read, translate and wipe stored diagnostic codes, and display and log output from various engine sensors. It's a useful bit of kit.

Unless it's a way of sending you a text alert message on your phone telling you a sensor's just gone off while driving....
