Not on ebay, but a boozy purchase nonetheless... a Campagnolo cycling jersey that I fell in love with after a glass of red too many. I have no bikes with Campag components, but I wear it with pride on my commute into work on my Shimano-equipped bike

Collector's Disease

I've bought books I have never read.
Collected LPs I have never listened to,
Bikes that I've never rode.
Spare parts I will never need,
Tools that I've never used.
Odds and ends that will be useful,
On the day after I've thrown them out.

Oh damn you car boot sales -
My cheque-book you empty, my garage you fill.
Ebay is my best friend
Providing a useful service.
It keeps the postman in work.
Allowing others to clear their attic,
Whilst I fill mine.
I'm sure it will all be useful -
One day on the twelfth of never.

Being a bit of a sucker for obscure Italian steel I'd bid on a bike frame, with only 1 photo, no size listed so it may even be too small. I also failed to notice that the seller would'nt post, so I've got to go and collect it.......from York (I live in London). So I've just had to spend £85 on the train to go and collect it this weekend (the frame was £93) so the cost has almost doubled immediately, and if its too small I'll have to sell it. I think I got OK deal but until I see it in the flesh I won't know.

Well I went and collected today, and can confirm that on this occasion drunken ebay bidding has led to one of the most rewarding experience ever^_^.

I got a beautiful and pretty unique looking Simoncini Super Record in Columbus SLX, which apart from a few paint chips and tiny rust spots is in great condition for what must be nearly 30 years old. Not got the original fork, just a alu one covered with pretend carbon, it also came fitted with a Campagnolo Chorus headset and Campagnolo bottom bracket, as it should.

But the magic has only just begun......the seller met me at York station and had brought along some other stuff that he wanted to get rid of, and next out the back of the car was this lovely Brian Rourke.Again a few very small spots of rust but its LOVELY!

I was instantly smitten with it, those forks, drool:becool:. The paint has a lovely sparkle not shown in this picture. It has no tubing listed but is lighter than the Simoncini. it has a sticker on saying its been renovated by Bob Jackson. It has 130mm rear spacing (as does the Simoncini) so not 'that' old (unless they been reset). Does anyone know the Rourke stamping system? @totallyfixed perhaps as I know he has a lovely Rourke. The bb shell is stamped with E and 1 near the non drive side of the bb and has the number 3572 across the middle. If anyone has any clues as to what that means in terms of age I've love to know.

The seller was in a hurry to be off to a friends surprise birthday party, so we struck a deal for the 'extras' and hurriedly decanted a box of parts into my ruksak and a carrier bag. I then returned to London, carrying it all on the tube across town where I've just properly checked the bag. Mostly all Campagnolo, no Record or any of the super shiny stuff, but I was stlll a bit stunned at the bounty

Highlights, a nice new Chorus 10 speed cranks and RD for the Simoncini, 3 pairs of Look pedals, loads of Campag chainrings, I'm set for spares for years! Shifters mostly Mirage but the Daytona ones or the silver Veloce levers will go on for now but may be upgraded later. I just need wheels (silver campag hopefully) ,brakes (campag skeleton) handlebars (panto cinelli) and saddle and the Simoncini is as good as rolling. I can't wait. Not sure what to do with the Rourke yet, I was thinking of 105 groupset in black but on reflection think it will look better with Silver Campag too, which I now seem to have plenty of^_^. The cost of both frames and all the kit, £340, which I think is a massive win and I can't wait to get them both up and running. Drunken eBay = winning on this occassion.

Time to sink a few celebratory beers and hit ebay for the missing bits, what the worst that could happen.......

I almost made a complete arse of it a few weeks ago, bidding for a 1970 Panini World Cup album. Thankfully someone was slightly considerably more drunk than I was or I may now be sleeping on a park bench again.

And I can tell you that I woke up the next morning and punched the air when I discovered that I had "lost"...

Not so much drunk, but a game i played on nights in a previous job. We would bid on assorts of stuff for a bet, and see who dared to bid the latest with the highest price, and the winner got his beers bought after the last night shift. I won once with a bid of £39999 on a Ferrari with a few hours to go, and i was bricking it because i was winning with 10 minutes left, it went for £41000. My mate wasn't so lucky, he bid £3500 with a hour to go for an Ice cream van and won it  he somehow got out of the deal.

I'm late the party and only joined eBay a few months ago. I'm sure its a right of passage for many but last week I had my first drunken eBay purchase.

I went out on the town and had a skinful, upon returning home I don't even remember logging into eBay and bidding. Next thing I know 2 days later I get the 'congratulations you've won email'. I was like, oh god, won what?

Being a bit of a sucker for obscure Italian steel I'd bid on a bike frame, with only 1 photo, no size listed so it may even be too small. I'm sure that's tame by some standards, so come on, share some of your booze fuelled buys, the good, the bad and the dafter the better.
I see it worked out OK then. :becool:

I can't offhand remember any alcohol fueled ebay purchases. It's not beyond the realms of possibilities that, with enough money in the bank and enough ale in my belly, I could end up with an Austin Metro.

DCLane

Found in the Yorkshire hills ...
Erm ... the Veltec wheelset below this morning. No alcohol involved, just being too half-asleep to properly look at what I was bidding on.

I've had to start a thread to figure out what the heck I've bought this time *

* Personally I blame Middlesbrough. I've been there twice in 2 weeks and both times I've bought a wheelset on eBay 8 hours before going.
