... and the sky is grey (actually it's beautifully warm and sunny here), but as it's the first day of Autumn today, how is it progressing in your neck of the woods?
Patchy here, there are signs of colour change apparent, but not spectacularly yet, but I think in a few days the autumn colouration will be in full swing.

Been very nippy on the morning commutes (air temp... not me). I can still see evidence of some green trees but a lot are now brown or on their way. That's ok, I love the Autumn  The forecast is positively tropical, for the weekend though. The last throws of Summer

Even the M1 was looking fabulous today. Now I'm back in The Smoke, and about to go for a pootle down the river, dodging satellite debris. A beautiful evening.

Haven't seen much difference, but give it a week or two and it'll start getting :cold: again ...

It's a bit more complicated than that...
The (sick) Horse Chestnuts are completely buggered, and have been since half-way through August. The rest of the trees are just beginning to follow suit.

Especially, when I was young (lo, these many years), doing cross-country training at night and being taken short, dock leaves

This time last year I was very ill in hospital, and ended up being in a ward that overlooked one side of the hospital where the colour of the trees stayed the same, leaving me to not really think about it

Having forgotten, imagine my surprise then when, on a 'physio walk' I finally saw out the other side of the building and all the leaves were red and yellow!

Considering I'd nearly died in that wretched place, it was the most beautiful thing I'd seen in a very long time!!

Don't take the colour for granted!

Yes. I've hardly seen a healthy horse-chestnut for a couple of years now - though there was one in Chobham yesterday.

[edit]
An odd thing - in the Islands of Scotland around Glasgow beech is often used as a hedging plant, even though it can't cope with the salt air, and was going brown when we were there in early August.
