all year touring tent recomendations

just in case no one has mentioned it  Hilleberg Nammatj.... (pronounced nam mat ee)

We have the 3GT model for 2 people and having seen it pitched alongside the Nallo 3 GT we knew instantly that it was the Nammatj that we required not least of all because the poles with the Nammatj are an any pole, any sleeve job whereas they are not for the Nallo...

Our Nammatj has stood up to the tail end of a hurricane which was bringing mature trees down all around us (we were camped in the middle of the field because of this away from any shelter - the tent didn't bat an eyelid, though we didn't get any sleep that night!) - can't fault it and it has now become out main tent instead of either of my old Vango Force 10 mk IV's...
We did get the footprint with it and this has mostly likely saved us from having holes in the groundsheet - the footprint has them instead (I used self adhesive inner tube patches to repair the holes and the patches are still going strong).

You do need to learn the fabric though - it relaxes considerably in damp air and you need to tighten things up and remember to slacken them off again the next day when it dries out. This is apparently (so I was told when the tent and I visited the Hilleberg HQ at Frösön). If you don't you can over stretch some of the seams and leave tent with a minor leak... annoying but once you know it is not a problem.

Cost wise - I wouldn't bat an eyelid over it now, now that I have one and have lived out of it for a year... It has proved its worth and I don't doubt for one minute that there are cheaper ones out there, but you won't find me out in them in really bad weather (except for perhaps the Vango Force 10 mk IV which as also stood up to the same conditions, but has let me down on one occasion in +40 years)

We also have a Nammatj 3 GT for the two of us, and that was the reason I recommended the Nammatj 2 for demanding solo use. These are very comfortable and reliable tents - I think the best in the market. Not everyone needs such quality, but if you do, this is the real thing. We similarly have a footprint, and we needed it. It (i.e. the footprint) now has many patched holes after a week in Croatia.
