Allenheads - Waskerley Way

I have been told that the first 10 miles of this is up hill. Is this like an incline or a total mountain?

I've not cycled it, but it's a very hilly part of the country, so 'total mountain' is more likely than 'incline'.

Another point to consider is the condition of the path.

A mate of mine did the C2C - which I believe goes this way - he told me parts of the path near the Cumbria/ County Durham border were very poorly maintained.

More suited to a mountain bike than a hybrid, and certainly not suitable for a road bike.

Thanks for the post! Yeah I believe the first 10 miles - its a 50 miler ride in total; are up hill then all the way down after that. We are staying a hotel overnight and then starting morning after to tynemouth which im looking forward to.

I am doing the c2c in april and yeah we will be covering this bit so suppose its good practice!

From Allenheads hotel there is approximately 1.5 - 2 miles of climbing up to the County Durham border, then it's down hill for about 6 miles in to Rockhope. From there it's either stay on the road to Stanhope and up Crawleyside bank, or tackle the loose surface of the Boltslaw incline, then a trek across the moor following the old railway line to Parkhead station, from there it's more or less down hill to Newcastle.. http://www.wrracing.net/c2c/

I did the path last April on the Secteur, which yes, is a road bike.

However, I'd agree with Pale Rider - it's better on a hybrid or the road that's alongside it.

It's certainly undulating until you pick up the Waskerly Way at Parkhead Station then it's downhill all the way to the coast.
There's a climb out of Allenheads which from memory probably has an average gradient of about 4% and around 1.5-2k
Followed by a long descent down into Rookhope.
From Rookhope you can continue on road to Stanhope then up Crawleyside Bank which is a 4.2k climb with an average gradient of 4.9%, which a section at 16%. This will take you to the start of the Waskerly Way.
If you prefer from Rookhope you can take the off road option (depending on time of year). This is good track which will take up onto the moor top and on to Parkhead. I prefer this route.
Either way it's up hill from Allenheads to Parkhead.
