That is stupid. It's like saying I'm not riding my Mountain Bike down a muddy hill so I'm doing wrong. Coppers eh!

The time thing is daft. I'm interesting to know who she is quoting, as she doesn't say - the coppers or the man in question?

If they've been questioning him because he looked wrong, I'd understand. The times I've seen a chav on a Brom, and thought, I bet you didn't buy that did you?

In fact I know of one that got recovered from thieves exactly because someone I know saw some kids with it, and reckoned it was suspect, and collared a passing copper to investigate.

(I think it was possibly the one I'd seen earlier, locked with a big loop of cable lock round just the main frame tube, to a bollard. No wonder it was nicked.)

I too would like to know a little more. At face value it looks rediculous, several extra cops doing what proibably 2 could do on foot.

Yeah, this is a rubbish story. No info, just a critisism of the police.

The chances are they had reason to suspect him. If it looks suspicious, they have to investigate. Dont they?

Yes. If it was your brom, or mine, and we thought a bunch of coppers had just watched an unlikely chap ride one past, we'd be pissed off.

I'll bet said commuter was not white and in a pin striped suit........
The 'Sus' laws may have been replealed but given the non-white population of London is in the teens in percent terms they still manage to make up well over three quarters of the stop and search hits.

There is always the possibilty that there had been a number of cycle thefts in the area. Maybe the police were addressing this.

As for there being 6 of them. If they are TSG then theres your answer, there are always a few of them in vans. Maybe they should ignore a possible crime and come back when theres only one of them!

I remember when I first started driving I was stopped three times in a week - as a white middle class male this surprised me.

Until one of the coppers told me there had been a spate of thefts of Minis in the area (my vehicle of choice at the time) and they were being uber careful. Kinda makes sense, and they let me on my way soon enough.

I think theres always something to be said for riding what you want to ride, in what ever clothes you damn well feel like.

However I can see why they might be investigating thefts... S&S seems a bit stupid at times though.

Having had two (mountain) bikes stolen (from a locked garage) last year, I welcome the Police stopping people who look "wrong" on a particular bike.

Unfortunately, from the discussions I had with the Police at the time, the MTB (or MTB style bike) is the one most likely to be stolen, as this is what there is general demand for. This tallied, as my BMX and commuter bike - also in the garage at the time - were untouched!!

If this means that I can be stopped occassionally while on my MTB and not wearing MTB type clothing, I would have no problems. I go to the football, and are regularly "frisked" on the way in. Do I mind? No, because I can see the bigger picture of why it is done, and I have nothing to hide.

The sooner cycle theives - and equally people who are willing to buy these bikes who in reality must be suspicious of a "bargain" - actually believe there is a chance of being caught the better for the decent cyclist who is concerned about cycle security, and increasing insurance premiums.

However, as Police local to me seem to have had little success with none illuminated cyclists on an evening (except for occassional "crack downs" which seem more of a publicity stunt by the statistics generated), I can't see the position getting better quickly.

As an aside, a few years ago, my workplace was broken into during the early hours of the morning. Afterwards, it transpired that the local constabulary had driven past a young man carrying a computer base unit down the streen a few hundred yards away, but so as not to delay arrival at the crime scene hadn't stopped to enquire what he was doing!!

Maybe the cyclist was wearing a stripy jersey and a black mask, and had panniers with "SWAG" written on them in big bold letters? And maybe he uttered the immortal "It's a fair cop, guv'nors...."?

as I live in Lambeth and have lately had a Brompton stolen, I say, forget the questioning - take 'em out with a heatseeking missile!

And the article is pants.

Unbelievable. Assuming lights were in use this is such a criminal mis-use of resources it's not funny.

A crashed cyclist, needing ambulance...maybe at a push..if very very unlucky indeed..an air ambulance...will cost the tax payer a small fortune. But Dear Mr Head of Metropolitan police...pleeeaaase send them after murderers instead.
