I had a strange, experience with a fellow biker on my way home today. Granted, i'm coming back to commuting after a long while but I know the rules of the road and I try my best to be sensible. I'm learning all the time but mistakes can still be made.

I'm travelling down a hill on a dual carriageway and when looking behind me I can see another cycle's light so I know he's there. We are closing on the back of a bus that's at a bus stop so I look again, see there are no cars in the outside lane and indicate out. Then I move out to pass the bus (who was still indicating left so wasn't setting off).

All of a sudden at the next set of lights the other biker goes past me chuntering all sorts of expletives. I'm not even sure what I did wrong!

I'm sure it's likely I've made some sort of mistake but I'd have taken much better to the guy just letting me know what I should/shouldn't have done. Something I thought I picked out from his rant was "Learn to ******* ride..."

I guess with cycling, in most things these days you aren't allowed to be a novice in the eyes of some.

ah tek no notice Alex... idiots can be found on two wheels, four wheels, and on foot.

Where was this other cyclist when you overtook the stationary bus?

He was right behind me, uncomfortably close i'd say but I don't know if I'm just paranoid about space around me while getting used to being so exposed.

It shouldn't but it really bothered me. I'd been feeling really good about getting back on two wheel and building up my fitness and starting my commute and this just made me stop and think a while. Thanks for reading my sound-off!

Hi Alex, you'd think the cyclist would understand, as we're all beginners at some stage. Try not to let it get to you.

I had another cyclist speed past me the other night. I knew he was behind me some distance away, but then all of a sudden he came speeding past me which kind of shocked me and I nearly lost my balance. That's one of the things with bikes, they're so quiet. But he could have used his bell to let me know he was there. May be I was just going to slow for him?

Hi Alex.

I commute in/out of Leeds and there's a number of pretty awful riders/silly racing commuters there.

They'll have seen you ahead and decided that they could catch and pass you, probably without thinking too much.

Sounds like he's the one with issues.

Maybe he was trying to overtake when you went past the bus? Either way, it isn't difficult to anticipate you needing to move out. Maybe he was using you for a bit of shelter and he fell too far behind.

He was right behind me, uncomfortably close i'd say ...

Likely cause of problem is that he's a cock.

Alex, ignore him, it's no different to drivers that think they are good but have no spatial awareness or anticipation. If he rides in a way that limits his own time and space he'll eventually come a cropper.

Even if he was wanting to overtake, the onus is on him to do it safely. (Highway code rule 163 still applies to bikes too) Even if you hadn't signalled he should have anticipated your pulling out to pass the stopped bus indicating left.

You say that you looked behind and signalled that you were moving out to go around the bus, it seems to me that he was the one not concentrating on his riding and then got angry with you for his mistake. Just continue with and enjoying the commuting and ignore people such as him!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Forget it, he was rude and most likely a git. You are only dwelling on it because you wish that you'd said the things in reply that you've thought of since. ^_^
